"I love learning numbers."
Emmily is 7 years old. Like many young girls in Uganda, she wishes to be a teacher when she grows up. She wants to help others learn Math, her favorite subject. However, attending school regularly has been a constant challenge for Emmily due to her inability to pay school fees. In addition, with just barely over half of the female population able to read, the stats seem to be stacked against her.
Emmily’s mother died unexpectedly when Emmily was young. She has lived with her father and grandmother, in her grandmother’s home with 7 others, since she can remember. Her father works at a stone quarry making the equivalent of $2 per day. Her grandmother works as a subsistent gardener on her own plot, working very hard to put food on the table. Despite the hard work, the family is almost always hungry.
