Sponsorship Stories: Betty and Cammie
“I truly believe that young people like Betty are the future of Uganda and they just need to be given the chance to prove it.”
“I first met Betty on a CHF mission trip in 2008 with my high school son. We were volunteering our time at a boarding school/orphanage in Mukono, Uganda. As soon as I met Betty there was an instant bond. I can’t even really pinpoint what it was, we were just drawn to each other. Whenever we were at the school she was at my side if she wasn’t in class. There was something so special about Betty, and I knew I wanted to stay in touch with her. When I found out that her family was struggling to be able to keep her in school and that she was in the CHF sponsorship program, I jumped at the opportunity knowing it would allow us to stay connected.
Fast forward 7 years to 2015. I’ve been blessed to be able to travel back to Uganda 5 more times with CHF and have been able to spend time with Betty on each trip. She is like family now, I actually refer to her as my Ugandan daughter. It has been such a joy to watch her grow up into a beautiful, smart, godly young woman. She is excelling in school and will be completing Senior 6 (last year of high school) at the top of her class. She is a leader in her school and mentors the younger female students. She aspires to be an engineer, and knowing Betty as I do, she will be successful. We are looking forward to sponsoring her on through university. It humbles me to think that this bright, motivated girl might not have had the opportunity to get an education had we not been able to sponsor her. I truly believe that young people like Betty are the future of Uganda, and they just need to be given the chance to prove it.”
