Sponsorship Stories: The McDaniel Family
There is a simple, raw beauty in the way God used sponsorship to knit us together across continents. It’s easy to imagine that the joy we felt over being together is just a tiny glimpse into what Heaven might be like.
“For almost ten years our family sponsored Vincent through Children’s Heritage Foundation. Many people are familiar with the idea of sponsoring a child. For just $35 a month, you can make sure that a child who might not otherwise have access to basic supplies has an education, food, water and medical attention. But that’s just the bare bones of sponsorship; it can be so much more. We have been incredibly blessed by our choice to sponsor. Vincent has been a gift to us. Over the years, we have written letters back and forth, sent pictures and gifts, prayed for each other. We call him our son, our kids call him their brother.
During a November 2016 trip, we had the amazing opportunity to travel to Uganda with CHF and meet Vincent face to face. We laughed together, cried together, prayed together, traveled and ate. We sang loudly and danced crazily. He gave us a crash course in the Lugandan language. Our kids walked down the street holding his hand. It’s impossible to put into words how full my heart felt watching my biological children wrestle and play with their African brother. There is a simple, raw beauty in the way God used sponsorship to knit us together across continents. It’s easy to imagine that the joy we felt over being together is just a tiny glimpse into what Heaven might be like.
Vincent is twenty-two now and has graduated from school. He will start college courses in a few months. While he is no longer at school and in need of our sponsorship, he will always be a part of our family. We have learned – I have learned – so much about God’s definition of family through our decision to sponsor. It’s changed my understanding of what it looks like for God to include us, to bring us to Himself, to have unlimited space and love in His family tree.
We now have another sponsor son. Our family fell in love with him while volunteering at one of the schools in Uganda. Largely because of the experiences and relationships that they already have with Vincent, our kids were SO eager to sponsor that they are paying his fees from their own allowances. An eight and ten-year-old willingly giving up their only source of income just goes to show how transformational and amazing sponsoring a child can really be.
We started this journey with the intentions of using the resources that God has given us in order to be a blessing. It turned out that we were the ones who received a gift.”
